You're so frustrated because you don't know what to eat. Some of you may be on a FODMAPs diet and have no idea what you can actually eat, others are on Weight Watchers and counting points, some are on low carb, low fat, high protein, no fruit, no grains and it goes on and on. It's time to take a breath and stop focusing and worrying about food!
If we go back to basics we can understand that our body needs good nutrition to fuel itself. We don't think about this during the course of the day, but we need to fuel the cells of our body, our organs, brain, heart, lungs with optimum nutrition so the cells being created are perfect in shape, hydrated and functioning optimally. You don't want cells to be misshapen, irregular, not performing well, or at all. When our body is not getting the nutrition it needs to function, that's when aches, pains and diseases start. It's a slow process, you might think you're getting older or you may be diagnosed with a chronic condition that you think you were just genetically inclined to get. That's not necessarily true and studies show that disease is usually not from genetics, but rather from environmental triggers.
So what do you do? You start slowly by adding in food that you know you should eat. We can all agree that eating more fruit and more vegetables is sound. Focus on doing more of the good things. Studies show that once you start doing more of the good things, you are motivated to do even more good things and it starts a chain reaction.
Next, do not eat food that has added sugar in it that is not dessert. For instance, ketchup, salad dressings, muffins, packaged foods etc. Why eat sugar if it doesn't come in the form of a dessert where you know you will be eating sugar? The majority of our sugar during the course of the day comes from these non-sweet foods that we are unaware of.
Next, focus on replacing refined sugar desserts with natural sugar desserts. Honey, maple sugar, date sugar are very sweet and have added minerals and fiber to keep your blood sugar stable.
Once you have accomplished adding in more plant foods and have replaced sugar, you will find you naturally, lose weight and feel better. Feeling better leads to even better choices!
