Conventional wisdom says that depression is due to chemical imbalances in the brain. As with most conventional wisdom, it has it's day.
Did you know there are NO conclusive studies showing that there are any chemical imbalances in the brain when dealing with depression or other mental disorders?
'Direct-to-consumer advertising in America has allowed pharmaceutical companies to “teach” the public about brain chemical imbalances and serotonin deficiencies through cleverly worded taglines and absent FDA-policing.' According to Dr. Kelly Brogan.
Doctors who are against alternative treatments will claim that the benefits that people experience are due to the placebo effect and not due to any healing from the alternative treatment. Research is finding that the drugs used for depression which show a degree of helping are also in fact based on the placebo effect.
Current science has shown that the gut, our microbiome, communicates with our brain and the information is managed by our microbiome!
And what is the language? Inflammation.
Because of this new finding, depression now joins the ranks of diseases such as autoimmunity, heart disease and even cancer.
How do we manage inflammation in the body? Through food. Food alters our genes. Our genes are directly effected by the foods we eat. It's the communication they receive on how to act from what we put in our mouth.
Most of us don't eat food anymore and certainly not our kids. We eat food-like products, and when we do eat whole food, most of us are not eating fresh and organic rather we are eating traditionally farmed foods grown in soil that is depleted of any nutrient, foods chemically grown and meat injected with hormones and fed unnatural diets. According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, "Food is not just fuel, though. Food is information, and it speaks to our genes. We no longer can get away with eating food that screams at our genes. We need food that whispers a love song. The wrong food can impact your mood by driving blood sugar imbalance (which can masquerade as anxiety attacks, chronic fatigue, ADHD, and depression), by impacting your brain through your immune system in the case of dairy and wheat, and by depriving you of nutrients essential to balance hormones, your gut, your immune system, and your nervous system."
Adding to this unnatural mix wreaking havoc on our microbiome, we take drugs, antacids, OTC pain killers and drink fluids coming out of petro-chemical plastic containers.
In order to maintain good mental health, make sure your diet is filled with mostly plant foods grown organically and high quality meats if desired. Reduce and eliminate all highly processed foods and choose minimally processed at all times. This is especially important if you are dealing with a mental disorder or your child. Take supplements as needed for your particular situation such as this personalized nutrition profile test.
