Does Airborne Work?

When you're miserable with a cold, searching for a remedy that will work and get you back on your feet is important.  Does Airborne work to lessen the duration of your cold?

Airborne contains:
Vitamin A (100% Acetate) 5000 IU
Vitamin C 1000 mg
Vitamin E 30 IU
Magnesium (Sulfate) 40 mg
Zinc (Sulfate) 8 mg
Selenium (Sodium Selinite) 15 mcg
Manganese (Gluconate) 3 mg
Potassium (Bicarbonate) 75 mg
Lonicera, Forsythia, Schizonepeta, Ginger, Chinese Vitex, Isatis Root, Echinacea (350 mg)

Other Ingredients: Sorbitol, Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Natural Lemon-Lime Flavor, Polyethylene Glycol, Mineral Oil, Sucralose.

  • Following the directions on the bottle, taking up to 3 times a day, would give a person too much vitamin A.  Vitamin A acetate (not to be confused with Beta Carotene), is potentially harmful.  Taking this product 3 times a day in my opinion, is not recommended.

  • The herbal blend is fine, but if you are allergic to herbs of any kind, you may want to avoid this product as well.

  • The "other ingredients" are additives that are not needed.  Sorbitol is a chemical sugar as is Sucalose.  The children's Airborne contains real sugar.

But does Airborne work?

Vitamin C is a very safe vitamin, but it's reviews for cold severity and duration have been inconsistent.

Zinc Taking zinc, either as a syrup or lozenge, through the first few days of a cold may shorten the misery of an upper respiratory infection, a new research review shows. The review also found that zinc cut the number of days that kids missed school because of being sick and reduced the use of antibiotics by cold sufferers. It also appeared to prevent colds in people who used it over the course of about five months.

So, overall Airborne may work for some people, but my recommendation would be to try another source.  The other ingredients in Airborne are just not supported to help and can cause more problems.
