Is losing weight on a gluten free diet possible?
Gluten-free diets seem to be the rage these days with everyone from athletes to celebrities attributing their lean bodies and athletic performances to going gluten-free. Now many people are wondering if going gluten-free will work for them.
Interesting enough, research shows that most people who decide to go gluten-free actually GAIN weight.
How can this be? To answer this we need to know the difference between gluten allergy or intolerance and Celiac disease.
Celiac disease: Celiac Disease is not a food allergy - it is an
autoimmune disease. You cannot grow out of it. Celiac disease damages the villi of the intestines so they do not effectively absorb basic nutrients. If CD is left untreated, damage to the small bowel can be
chronic and life threatening, causing an increased risk of associated
disorders – both nutritional and immune related.
Food allergies, including wheat allergy: Is a condition that people can sometimes grow out of. Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include bloating, abdominal discomfort,
pain or diarrhea, or it may present with a variety of extraintestinal
symptoms including headaches and migraines, lethargy and tiredness,
attention-deficit disorder and hyperactivity.
