Many Americans do not realize that there many nutritional options for natural eye health
The Ocular Nutrition Society (ONS), gathered a collective statement of experts including opthalmology, optometry, diet and nutrition and primary care, to find out what nutrients can help to reduce the risk of vision
loss.
These nutrients that promote eye health in aging individuals include:
ZINC
VITAMIN C
VITAMIN E
LUTEIN
ZEAXANTHIN
LONG-CHAIN OMEGA-3 fatty acids
These experts agree that there is an urgent need to educate Americans about the role of natural eye health.
The panel was agreed that the lack of nutrient dense foods and processed foods in our diet is disconcerting. They also agreed that many multi-vitamin supplements do not contain the important nutrients necessary for eye health. "Taking a supplement specifically designed for eye
health that contains these key nutrients, in addition to a general
nutritional supplement, may therefore be a better approach to filling
dietary shortfalls.”
Our vision is taken for granted until we are older and problems start surfacing. Unfortunately, once problems begin it is harder to correct them. Simple steps such as improving our diet to incorporate more foods that contain the above mentioned nutrients and taking a supplement as well, can reduce or prevent problems in the future. Natural eye health is a simple thing we can do to help our vision as we age.
Sadly, ongoing problems related to eye health and age-related macular
degeneration are being perpetuated by a simple lack of knowledge about
effective
nutraceutical options. The experts hope that greater general awareness will develop as more studies are brought to the forefront,
empowering more people to retain vision and combat the
lifestyle-limiting afflictions that can lead to vision loss.
