What Are Good Protein Shakes For Fat Loss?

With so many diet aids on the market today, what are good protein shakes for fat loss amidst the dizzying array of weight loss shakes available?

Protein makes up most of the human body, so getting adequate protein in the diet and the right kind, is critical to the health, growth and repair of our bodies tissues.

Complete Essential Proteins are bioavailable to the body.  this means they are in a complete form and ready to be used by the body.  Meats, poultry and fish are considered complete proteins.  The protein found in vegetables, nuts and legumes are incomplete proteins and their bioavailablility is lower than with complete essential proteins.  If you are a vegan or vegetarian, consuming enough protein is very important.  If you have kids that are vegetarian, it's important to make sure their protein sources will give them the required daily amount.

Getting your protein from supplement/shake form is a guaranteed way to get the appropriate type of protein and the required amount for the day.  Choosing any kind of protein shake that you find at the grocery store or vitamin store is not a great idea.
  • Soy Protein:  not a recommended source of protein.  It's a cheaper type of protein, associated with allergies and for some women, soy is not recommended.
  • Egg Protein:  If you are allergic to milk and soy, this a good protein source.
  • Milk Protein: Contains a combination of Whey and Casein
  • Whey Protein:  Whey protein is considered to be the superior choice.  It's a little more expensive, but worth it for the results.  There is Whey Protein, and Casein and Isolate.
Whey Protein: slightly cheaper than Casein and Isolate and can cause stomach discomfort.
Casein:  Is a slow absorbing protein and best when used either overnight or early in the day.
Isolate:  An expensive form of whey and fast absorbing.
Hydrolized Whey Protein:  The most expensive protein.  It contains peptides that have anabolic effects.

What are you looking to achieve with your Protein supplement?  Weight loss? Body building? General Needs?  Asking yourself this question will guide you to the appropriate supplement.

If you're looking to lose weight, a meal replacement type shake will satisfy your calorie needs.  A whey protein isolate type is a good quality one to look for.  It should be sugar free with no sugar substitutes and no chemicals.  You should understand and be able to read the ingredient list.

If you're looking to gain muscle, a hydrolized whey protein is a good choice.

If you're looking for general supplementation, and don't have any allergy issues, a good whey casein supplement is one to try.
