5 Possible Reasons for Unexplained Weight Gain

5 Possible Reasons for Unexplained Weight Gain.

You're doing everything right.  You eat well, you're exercising and getting enough sleep, then why are you gaining weight?

Here are 5 possible reasons for your unexplained weight gain.

Medication:  Certain medicines can lead to increased weight.  They include steroids and certain diabetic, blood-pressure, anti depressant and migraine medications.  To learn more about potential side effects of your meds, check out this site www.pdrhealth.com.  Always check with your doctor before stopping any medications.

Depression:  Not treated, depression can wreak havoc in your body.  Depression raises cortisol levels which in turn messes with your insulin levels resulting in weight gain.  There are great counseling options to look into, but the most important thing is to address it.  Once you get your depression under control, you may have the added benefit of losing weight!

Stress:   Again, stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, and when stress becomes chronic, abdominal obesity risk is higher.  Stress has so many other health challenge risks associated with it, that managing your stress will result in not only weight reduction, but your risks of certain illnesses will go down.

Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation results in a disruption of a hormone thought to regulate appetite and metabolism.  Researchers at Columbia University found that people who get four or fewer hours of sleep a night are 73 percent more likely to be obese. In another study researchers found that with only four hours of sleep a night for two nights, participants had a 24-percent increase in hunger.  If sleep deprivation is ongoing, the increase in appetite and the hormone disruption associated with it will lead to weight gain.

Hypothyroidism: The thyroid gland secretes hormones that control metabolism. If the gland doesn’t produce enough of these hormones, you have hypothyroidism and could gain weight as a result. The common cause of this condition is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a disease that causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland.

It's important to get a thorough check up when you have unexplained weight gain, so you can address your issues and be on your way to a slimmer and healthier you!
