Better Sleep 101

Better Sleep, 101

You struggle to fall asleep, tossing and turning for hours.  It's frustrating, you look at the clock and get more worked up.  I know, I've been there.  Or you fall asleep only to wake up in the wee hours of the morning unable to fall back asleep, tossing and turning.  I know, I've been there too.

I've learned some things that have helped me over the years, and I call it Better Sleep 101.

If anxiety is keeping you from falling asleep at night, try these tips:
  • Calming yourself during the day is big.  One thing you can try is drinking chamomile tea all day.  Chamomile tea is naturally relaxing and if you drink it during the day, your body will start to naturally relax, setting you up for a better sleep at night.

  • At night, take a hot bath one half hour before bedtime.  Hot baths raise body temperature and cause a relaxation response.

  • While in the bath, write a list of all the things you need to do, have to do, didn't do...anything that's on your mind, get it out.   Then fold it up and put it out of your mind until tomorrow.

If waking up early is your problem, try these tips:

  • Focus on one word and say it over and over in your head.  Or focus on your breath, listen to yourself breathe in and out.

  • Stay in bed!  Don't move or look at the clock, stay still.  Your body will get the benefit of rest at the very least if you don't end up sleeping.  It's important not to get up and walk around because you will have awakened you brain and you won't be getting the benefit of rest.

If these tips have helped you, please leave a comment below, I'd love to hear from you.  If you have tips you'd like to share that can benefit someone feel free to share!
